And I get the reason those countries wanted into NATO

after 1/2 a century under Soviet control, being protected by us from that seems pretty smart.

But, you have to wonder if continuing to expand pushed Russia into a corner. If we had stopped after Poland and the first couple, would Russia have felt less threatened and had less reason to get aggressive? Everyone wants to say this is Putin putting the band back together, but did we create Putin by giving him the ammunition? Same as Hitler, the Allies in many ways created Hitler by so severely punishing Germany after WW1 that someone like him had a platform of hatred of the Allies to build a following.
